Family Movies That Don't Age

Here are five great films that haven't lost their impact over time.

It's seems pretty clear that growing up having watched a film over and over again will make you love that movie no matter what anyone else says. Making friends sit down as adults and watching some of those movies, while expecting them to enjoy it, is another matter completely. The following list however, contains films that were great when they came out in the 80's and can be enjoyed today be a new generation.

Goonies-How many children of the 80’s went out and looked for buried treasure or pirate ships in the nearest body of water (streams and creeks included)? Goonies is the story of a group of kids who find a treasure map of the infamous One-Eyed Willy hidden bootie. Throw in a couple of bad guys, a series of booby traps and incredibly fun comedic dialogue and it’s easy to see why this movie should remain a favorite of kids and adults today.

Adventures in Babysitting-How many little girls in the 80’s watched this film and then used the curtains as a wedding vale? This fast-paced romp speeds through the night of reluctant babysitter Chris, who somehow ends up in downtown Chicago with three kids. One blown-out tire later, a shot-out window, a stolen Playboy magazine, a frat party and a Chicago Blues club serenade and all hell breaks loose. Be aware of the subway scene, as young children may need “earmuffs” for a brief snippet of bad language.

Clue-Though it seems unlikely a board game could successfully be turned into a movie, it is in fact the truth. Cleverly set as a dinner party attended by all the characters originated by the game; Ms. Scarlet, Colonel Mustard; the group meet for dinner, but find the pleasantries of the night cut short by blackmail, foul play and murder. Trying to figure out which guest is the guilty party is only half the fun. The great perfomances by veteran actors like Tim Curry and Madeline Stowe as well as the witty and delightful dialogue make this film fantastic.

The Princess Bride-Everyone loves a great fairytale. Pirates, a kidnapped princess, a masked swordsman; these are but a few of the reasons why this film is so beloved. This slightly tongue-in-cheek film, featuring Princess Buttercup, The Dread Pirate Roberts, a bashful giant and a revenge seeking swordsman is so enchanting that children and adults both fall in love with it. Nearly every element of youthful games of make-believe are present in this film, perhaps that’s why it has become, and will remain a modern classic.

The Last Dragon-Though slightly under most peoples radar this film is such a romping good time every kid should watch it. This film was produced by Barry Gordy’s Motown Productions and has the music to prove it. Leroy Green, aka Bruce Leroy, is a kung-fu expert, but too shy and timid to believe in his own talents. This film is so much fun because of the great kung-fu (pg rated) that will make you want to run out and start taking karate lessons.
