Fred reviews the Special Features off the Glory Road DVD.
Biographies can make great DVDs because the extra features will let you look at the real people and compare them to the film. Since the subjects of Glory Road are still alive, the real Coach Don Haskins, his wife and his players are well featured on the DVD. Of course everyone's going to be positive. A DVD is not the place for the dark side of Coach Haskins. And it repeats a lot of the information in the film, but you see what the non-glamorous, non-Hollywood actors looked like and can imagine them doing the things in the movie. The athletes' memory of the climactic game provides a genuine history of the game. The movie is fine for the rousing Hollywood crowd pleaser, but the athletes actually take you back in time and reveal some of the racism a little more intensely than the PG movie. A short feature on the practicing methods of Don Haskins is a puff piece but it shows real movie preproduction practices with Haskins and athletes so it effectively glorifies the intense workout. Four deleted scenes don't add much except jockish philosophy on the basketball court, team bonding pranks and rival coach Rupp. All aspects are fully covered in the film, so these are just the curious extra bits.
