Fred tests re-releases on his 56" projection set. The rest of us can only wish.

Whenever they re-release an older movie on DVD, I'm interested to pop it in the DVD player I've got hooked up to the 56" JVC projection set. The HDMI progressive scan blow-up can often make movies look better than ever.

Mommie Dearest is the '80s dressed up to be the '40s. You see all the grain of the old film and it's not particularly colorful with most of the greens coming through dull. It's like a colorized Joan Crawford movie, but that kind of works. Her world shouldn't be in HD.

Faye Dunaway's Joan Crawford cheeks poke out of her face with enough detail to capture her essences and all the pasty faces show the tiniest hints of blush. It's enough so that the film does not suffer from being displayed in a superior format. It struggles to maintain its integrity and eeks through with a little bit of style.
