One of Our Own – DVD Movie ReviewWhat to Expect, When You’re Not Expecting!
One of Our Own, thought provoking drama about a couple that have exhausted all conventional approaches to surrogacy, and opt for an under-the-table method to make a baby.
Starring Josh Randall (Timber Falls), Claire Rankin (Stargate Atlantis), Kate Beahan (The Wicker Man) and Matthew Lillard (Scream, Scooby Doo), this drama will keep the viewer guessing as a childless couple use an unusual method for making their dreams a reality. One of Our Own OverviewDiane (Rankin) and husband Stellan (Randall) are unable to conceive and have had no luck with traditional methods of surrogacy. When Diane meets pregnant Cathy (Beahan), and discovers that she is carrying the baby for someone else, Dianne makes an under-the-table; no lawyers, no contracts, no agencies deal with Cathy to bear a child for her and Stellan. When Cathy meets Stellan’s boss, Bob (Lillard) and they fall in love, complications occur when Bob wants to raise the baby as his own with Cathy, unaware that it is Stellan’s baby. When Diane unexpectedly falls pregnant, and no longer wants the baby Cathy is carrying, things become more complicated. One of Our Own ReviewWhile One of Our Own is a drama, it has funny moments scattered throughout the film. The surreal situation is thought provoking and the actors portray their characters well, making the viewer sympathize with each and every one of them. When Dianne and Stellan, unable to conceive a child on there own, and devastated by the loss of a child from a previous surrogate who miscarried, enlist in the help of a young fertile women, Cathy, to be a surrogate, they believe the hardest part will be the part of conception, for which, Stellan will have to sleep with Cathy. Cathy charges $30,000 as opposed to the $100,000 charged through the agencies. This under-the-table deal is free of contracts, lawyers and agencies and is based on a verbal agreement between the couple and Cathy. When Cathy, now pregnant with Stellan’s child, falls in love with Stellan’s boss Bob, things become tricky. Then when Dianne falls pregnant, the viewer could be briefly fooled into believing that both couples will have a baby and live happily ever after. However, not everyone wants the same thing and this is where the situation becomes problematic. The plot twists and turns will keep the viewer guessing and surprised by the ending. One of Our Own is a very entertaining and interesting movie.
