The Live, Laugh and Love Issue: wherein Our Hero bares all in a 4 disc DVD boxed set by its genius creators.
In Our Hero's very first scene, we're introduced to Kale Stiglic (Cara Pifko), 17, wrestling with a size medium dress in the fitting room of a shop. And isn't that such the metaphor ... teens fight against everything because so much is out of their control. For Kale, things are much more over-exposed as her father regularly humiliates her in his daily humour column. Going to school becomes a walk of shame so she decides to fight fire with fire and hence Our Hero, the topical yet deeply personal DIY 'zine is born. A Zine is a ... 'wee independent publication made purely out of passion' ... 'sold in the "pulsing underground press centers" of music or book stores for cheapcheap'. This, of course, is way before the weblogging and podcasting days. It's a smart, wacky, witty series with very clever use of mixed media flopping between live action to comic cut outs. It kind of reminds me of another Canadian TV series called Student Bodies that mixed live action with animation, only Our Hero was distinctly Canadian right down to Kale's subtle Maritimes-ish (kinda Mid-West) accent. The series is a definite ... and I would go so far as to say HANDS DOWN ... THE teen TV series to watch. And thankfully, I'm not alone in saying this as it was critically-acclaimed by many media outlets in its initial broadcast in Canada, the US, Australia and France. "Watch this show, if you have any sense at all!" - John Doyle, The Globe and Mail In the spirit of its heroine's Do-It-Yourself-ness ... Heroic Film Company is self-distributing the Complete Series through its website OurHero.tv. In its 4 disc DVD box set you get all 26 laugh-out-loud hilarious episodes, trailer and joke reels with selected commentary by the creators and cast. The commentaries are amusing to listen to as they've managed to cram about 7 people into a room with a mic and just have them talk. Sometimes the mic gets passed to a talker, sometimes, it doesn't get there ... but really, who cares? I was a fan of the series during its broadcast that I even have a published copy of Our Hero' "The Horror Issue" 'zine. Hey, if a TV series managed to charm the critic in me ... I strongly suggest you take a look.
