Mo'Nique plays a full-figured fashion designer ready to make a name for herself in Phat Girlz, now on DVD.

  • Year of Release: 2006
  • Distribution: 20th Century Fox
  • No. of Discs: Double-Sided Disc

  • Released today (Aug 22), Comedienne Mo'Nique plays Jazmin, a full-figured fashion designer who just wants the world to accept her. After winning a trip to a five star resort, she, her cousin and best friend head to Palm Springs in search of some rest, relaxation and perhaps love.

The film is a welcome surprise about the basic moral lesson in accepting yourself for who you are, in whatever shape you may come in. As they say in the film ... "PHAT stands for Pretty Hot And Thick." While the film has its share of problems, (mostly technical), the heart and passion pumping through the screen makes up for it. There is a lot of heart and soul put into each frame for Nnegest Likké's directorial debut who incidentally also wrote the script.

Found on the DVD, you have a choice whether you would like to watch the Theatrical Version, or Extended Version in Anamorphic Widescreen. Among the load of special features which includes Director commentary, Deleted & Alternate scenes, blooper reel, trailer, Making of and the Director's Video Diary, lies a very heartfelt 8 minute tribute to its producer Bobby Newmyer who passed 2 weeks after signing the distribution deal with 20th Century Fox.

While I wouldn't classify the film as a must see, I would recommend it to a friend who thinks she has a weight problem when she's beautiful, just the way she is. It was definitely a delightful pick-me-up.
