Fred finds the Pink Panther release amusing, but boring.
Steve Martin was so funny in The Pink Panther, I just couldn't wait to see more of him on the DVD. Especially knowing that the film went from a PG-13 to a PG movie, there must have been some brilliant adult jokes. Well, the DVD sticks to family friendly material, and a lot of the deletions are just boring, but there is some Steve Martin genius within. Some extra Martin pratfalls are good like collapsing bleachers, destroying an office and hanging from a speeding car. Outtakes of Clousseau in the rain give you more "I would like to buy a hamburger" madness. But the long opening is nothing. It's a good thing they trimmed. Director Shawn Levy explains why he loves it, but it's pure indulgence, so eventually he was smart enough to let it go. Clousseau in coach seating doesn't really go anywhere and the whole bathroom/hijacking confusion is a lesser version of the "I would like to buy a hamburger" misunderstanding in the final film. Also, there's more Kevin Kline as Dreyfuss but since he's a straight man, it's not particularly entertaining without any Clousseau there. The alternate opening titles have an interesting CGI cat. While it was nice to see the traditional 2D version in the film, this does not look awful. It would have been a perfectly acceptable modern update and it's nice to see on the DVD.
