Surf's Up on this really awesome release of Point Break with featurettes and behind the scenes footage ... it's like ... epic, dude.
While I have fond memories of watching Point Break in my adolescence, it seemed rather unnecessary to release the action film to a Pure Adrenaline Edition. However, my opinion changed after watching its Special Features.
In the 23 minute It's Make Or Break featurette, among the behind the scenes 'Making Of' footage we actually have both Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey in recent interviews looking back on the times they had while shooting the film. The journey the movie took from script to screen reminds me very much like how Romancing the Stone got made as well. What's surprising is that the film was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and it's perhaps because of her feminine touch that saved the film from becoming a "my surfboard is bigger than your surfboard" film. Much of it intercuts with recent and past promo interviews and how they actually caught the big YMAY wave on screen. Also amusing is Gary Busey and his ancedotes ... I wonder if he had a drink before the interview.
The Ride The Wave featurette focuses on the spirituality of surfing, while the Adrenaline Junkies featurette is pure action ancedotes and stresse the point that Swayze actually really DID jump out of the plane and it wasn't a stunt man.
The On Location: Malibu featurette follows two of the surfer robbers 'Nathaniel' and 'Jess' on location where they shot pivotal scenes in the movie such as the campfire scene, the football on the beach scene and where they eventually shot photos for the theatrical poster.
More ancedotal than anything, it's a nice little release to have, especially if you're either a Keanu Reeves or Patrick Swayze fan.
