  • Seeing as how I'm unable to compare previously released versions of Romancing the Stone, it's Special Edition release features several interesting featurettes, behind the scenes footage, 8 deleted scenes and a touching tribute to its late screenwriter.

The film itself still stands as a classic on its own. A very timeless, entertaining romp of an adventure film, that movies produced today should aspire to. It has enough romance, adventure and comedy to please any crowd.

Its special features are mostly taken from interviews from the press junket in 1984 to the present (I'd guestimate around 2005.) It stars it's leading man/ producer Michael Douglas, leading lady Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas' former roommate Danny Devito looking back at the trials and tribulations of filming in the tempermental weather and torrential rains of Mexico - most of which can basically be read about in the insert included with the DVD.

What is surprising (or not) is there lies a touching tribute to the penned master of the story, Diane Thomas. A former waitress in Malibu, turned sought after screenwriter who passes in an untimely fashion while her stuntman boyfriend was driving the Porsche Michael Douglas bought for her. Many of those interviewed say that she created a new genre and always refer back to Romancing the Stone as its starting point.

The film is presented in its Widescreen format with Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound for that really cool Mudslide and Waterfalls sequence.

Also released with Special Edition status is its sequel Jewel of the Nile with 6 deleted scenes and 2 featurettes.
