The first of his Revenge Trilogy set, Park Chan-wook starts with the father of a murdered daughter wanting to know why, and showing no mercy.
Alot has been praised about Park Chan-wook's Revenge Trilogy series starting with the first, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. In this heavily weaved storyline of a plot, we have a brother, who's deaf and cares for his sister who is terminally ill, getting laid off from work. This sends him onto the black market selling his organs only to get scammed out of a kidney and his money. In an effort to find an alternate way to pay for his sister's medical expenses, he plans with his activist friend, to kidnap the daughter of a wealthy businessman ... his former boss. Things go incredibly awry and thus, each seeks vengence on the other for the wrong they've done. Park manages to balance deep emotions with comedic, sometimes irritating and very absurd sequences. What I both loved and hated about his story is that he never let his characters rest for a bit ... something was always happening, someone always wanted revenge. The DVD, released by Tartan Video, comes with Director's Commentary, Behind the Scenes First Look at Lady Vengeance, Park's last installment of the series, Photo Gallery and trailers for Tartan Asia Extreme New releases. In its commentary, Director Park, is joined by another director who appeared in the film, Ryu Seung Wan. It's always interesting to listen (or read subtitles) on how films from other countries are put together; what themes and elements were created through its process and how they eventually executed it. With Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Park, with the conversational questioning of Ryu, we're given a rather in-depth thematic deconstruction that is both entertaining and fascinating to learn about. It's no question that there is a great amount of detailed attention paid to every frame of this film and Park delights in knowing he's confusing his audience and making them irritable with his comedic yet tragic sequences. Others in this Trilogy are Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance which gets released by Tartan Video Sept 26.
