Lawrence Olivier, James Mason and Gregory Peck star in this intense drama about a diabolical plan to clone Adolph Hitler.

This is a shocking story starting some of Hollywood’s best dramatic actors, making this an engrossing tale with rich performances. This 1978 movie is just as bothersome and entertaining to day as it was when it was produced.

Dr. Josef Mengele, the evil Auschwitz Nazi, is living in South America and has managed to create 94 boys with the same genetic makeup as Hitler. They live in various parts of the world, and when they reach a certain age, Mengele sends his associates out around the globe to kill each of their fathers in order to reproduce Hitler’s own childhood. By reproducing the events of Hitler’s life, they hope to create the same psychological makeup and thought process that the original Hitler had, therefore reinstating the Nazi regime and taking over once again. This can only be accomplished with another Hitler.

Nazi Hunting

Barry Kohler (Steve Guttenberg), a young Nazi hunter discovers this plot but is killed by loyalists to Mengele before he is able to fully uncover the entire scope of the scheme and the people who intend to create a Fourth Reich. But then a veteran Nazi hunter picks up the trail and tries to put the pieces of the puzzle together. He learns of the deaths of the fathers of several boys and cannot quite figure out the plot until he sees their sons. All of the little Hitlers are identical in appearance. Soon he realizes the true depth of the conspiracy and must stop the evil scheme before it is too late.

Gregory Peck plays Josef Mengele, the evil man whose only desire in life now is to rekindle the illustrious Third Reich. Lawrence Olivier turns in an incredible performance as Ezra Lieberman, the Nazi hunter who is intent on putting a stop to the plan.

The story comes to a climax when the two meet. Mengele and Lieberman are at last face to face. But what is to become of the boys? Only Lieberman knows who they are and he is the only one who can save their lives or arrange for them all to be murdered. This death camp survivor has a heavy burden with this final decision.

This is definitely an intriguing and suspenseful story, and the acting is first rate. With this cast it can’t help but be an exceptional film. It’s a disturbing idea that makes a fascinating movie.
