The horror legend of Mae Nak gets updated and given a British spin in the Ghost of Mae Nak.
Already 20 some movies made on the legend of the vengeful ghost, UK director Mark Duffield makes his directorial feature debut with The Ghost of Mae Nak.
After spending time in Thailand, Duffield became fascinated with Thai ghost stories and came across the story of Mae Nak. Mae mean 'mother' in Thai and discovered that there was a shrine dedicated to the ghost where hundreds of Thai people go for blessings and guidance.
The legend takes place over a hundred years ago and tells the story of Nak who dies while giving birth during a time of war. Her husband comes back from fighting thinking everything is alright only to discover he has been living with a ghost. The villagers then contain the spirit of Nak in a piece of bone cut from her skull.
This is where Duffield's movie updates the legend bringing it into present day Thailand. After feeling that most of the other 20 some films made on the legend leaned towards hysterical comedies, he watched the definitive film, the period film Nang Nak on the actual legend. The DVD release is available for your Halloween Horror Hauntings.
Special features include Audio commentary with Director Mark Duffield and a rather extensive 'On The Set of Mae Nak' that is basically a video diary of what goes on behind the scenes during filming with textual introductions to cast and crew, step by step clips of key scenes with a wide variety of special effects and bloopers.
