Edward Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti star in The Illusionist available on DVD January 9th.
My first impression of watching The Illusionist starring Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti and Jessica Biel was that it very much reminded me of Usual Suspects directed by Bryan Singer. In fact, how I often describe the movie is 'a period Usual Suspects'. And that isn't to say the film is poor because of its loose resemblance.
I am always up for a good intrigue story and am very much a fan of mystery, plot twists and turns, so long as they make a certain amount of sense. Which this film does. And it's also very satisfying to see Jessica Biel in a fairly juicy role that displays more of her abilities.
20th Century Fox releases the DVD making you choose between Letterbox and Widescreen editions. And apart from the audio commentary by writer/ director Neil Burger, there is not much else of worth found on the release. Even its two mini featurettes with interviews with Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, Rufus Sewell and Jessica Biel aren't that interesting. I was more fascinated with HOW the film was pieced together than how the cast FELT about the project.
But I suppose the tricks of the illusionists should stay secret.
