The Monster: DVD Review

aka Home Sweet Home

The dramatic horror film starring Shu Qi and Karena Lam has a lot of faults, but makes up for it with the Making Of featurette.

  • World Premiere: October 2005
  • Country of Production: Hong Kong
  • Year of Release: 2006
  • Distribution: Tai Seng
  • No. of Discs: 1
  • Language: Cantonese
  • Subtitles: English
  • Shy and introverted May (Shu Qi) moves into a new housing complex with her husband and son. A tad socially handicapped and overtly protective, her nightmare comes to life when someone kidnaps her son. This someone, just happens to be a creature living in the shadows of the complex who has mistaken May's son as her own.

While the metaphor is quite loud and clear; mother vs mother or "monster mother" vs. "monster mother" ie: Who is the real monster?, there is little else to the film that has a lasting effect as opposed to some of a better Asian horror flicks out there. (See, the Eye)

What's interesting about it, and this may just be for Asian cinephiles and the fan girl in me, is that you have Karena Lam and Shu Qi in the same movie. It would be similar to having Angelina Jolie and Rachel McAdams play opposite each other. I never thought it would happen, but star veteran Qi was out-acted by rising star Lam, who received a HK film nomination for her role.

Included on the DVD is a fascinating Making Of featurette. It documents the extensive grueling make-up regime Lam endured to transform her usual sunny attractive exterior into a empathetic yet horrifying creature of the night and the countless injuries Qi suffered while crawling and dropping through vents.
